Riots in Portland, Oregon as protesters break windows and threaten to burn down the Justice Center

There has been a call for calm in the United States after an American teenager who killed two people amid racial unrest last year was acquitted.

Kyle Rittenhouse, 18, testified that he acted in self-defense when he killed two men and injured a third in Wisconsin.

Friday’s ruling that Rittenhouse is not guilty has deeply divided America and sparked protests in several cities.

Politicians, including President Biden, and the families of the victims have called for calm and restraint.

“What we need right now is justice, not more violence,” family attorney Gaige Grosskreutz, who was shot and wounded by Rittenhouse, said in a statement.

“I urge everyone to express their views peacefully, as required by law,” Biden told reporters outside the White House.

Despite calls for calm, police said there was a riot in Portland on Friday night when about 200 people broke windows and threatened to burn down the local justice center.

There have also been protests in Chicago and New York, but on a much smaller scale than the civil unrest in the United States last year.

Rittenhouse said he acted in self-defense when he killed Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and wounded Gaige Grosskreutz, 28, in August 2020 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse was acquitted and all charges dropped.
